Analysis of Historical and Contemporary Works in Interactive Media

Volvelle

A Volvelle is a type of slide chart that is constructed with paper and has rotating parts. From ancient times to the present Volvelles have been used for a few different purposes but they all contain data and most are used for calculations. The most ancient example of a Volvelle is the pentagram from Hammurabi's time. This was and still is believed to be a symbol of witchcraft, though it actually is the path of Venus in 8 years and it rotates in a full circle in a span of 1199 or 1215 years. Some of the latest Volvelles that have been made are the Volvelles that can be found in the "Led Zeppelin III" album and in the games "Sorcerer" and "Mind Forever Voyaging".

Pop-Up Books

Pop-Up books, a book with pop-out art as seen above. Early pop-up books were made for adults and were used for scholarly works. These books were used for teaching and it was not until the late 18th century that this technique used on these books, started being used for entertainment purposes, mainly for children. Some of these pop-up books have also received attention as literary works for the degree of artistry and sophistication they entail. A great example is the book "Star Wars: A Pop-Up Guide to the Galaxy" which is shown in the picture above.

Games

Games were not always considered as interactive media but in time most games became so. Board games were one of the first considered as interactive, but they were still not considered media though games like the Monopoly and Chess became virtualized on PC's and Consoles and that is when they became considered as Interactive Media.

The first game ever considered as interactive media is known by most to be Pong, but there were more games before Pong even came out. In fact the first game came out 25 years before Pong, this game was called Cathode Ray Tube Amusement Device. The game was a missile simulator inspired by radar displays from WWII. By time games advanced a lot and are now very close to real-life by both graphics and physics.

Interactive 3D Art

Interactive art is one of the most ancient forms of Interactive Media but it hasn't been used a lot and it was not too famous. In the 1960's this type of art began to flourish more though it was partly being used for political reasons. People at this time found it inappropriate for the artist to carry the only creative power in their works. Some artist who held the same view decided to give the audience the power to become a part of this creative process and that's when Interactive Art started being used more. In the 1970's artists started to experiment with the new technologies that started coming out. Interactive Art took a bump and became a large phenomenon with the advent of computer based interactivity in the 1990's. When the 21st century began this 2D Interactive Art transformed into 3D interactive Art and they are the most famous out of all the works as they are simply amazing and beautiful.

Interactive Brochure (Own Work)

Brochures are a very recent media creation. They are usually made of a single page that is folded twice or three times. The main use of brochures is to pass information and is used a lot for advertising purposes. Nowadays most brochures are not made of paper as they are made on PC's virtually as they remove the cost of paper and printing and they add features like Interactivity, such as photo galleries, website links and turning pages.

Similarities and Differences in Styles and Techniques

In every technique and technique that exists there are both similarities and differences, some are minor and barely noticed, and some are major and easily noticed. The one thing that these works all have in common is that they are all in one way or another Interactive and it is the style of interactivity that differs. Though all these techniques started by using a piece of paper or cardboard they all evolved into virtual media. All of these works except the Brochure were all hand-made and hand painted in their early stages but all of them except for the Interactive 3D Art have ended up being made by machines and some being made and used by just electronic machines. A similar aspect that they have is that they all have a style that attracts people to them as they look interesting and very beautiful.

The Interrelationship between Various Strands of Art and Design

Most Art and Design objects have at least 1 or 2 things that are interrelated to each other. In my research and analysis on the chosen and above mentioned Art and Design works I have found out a few things. First of all is that all of these works have a creative and "painted" or drawn art in them and they all have a design of their own. Volvelles and Pop-Up books are related to each other and Volvelles were also used in some movable books and Pop-Up books and they all had movable parts to them. Games and interactive Art also have a kind of relationship as you have to touch, move and participate with the object just to see what it was actually made to look like. Anything created in an Art and Design manner all have something that ties them to each other but they al differ in style and technique.

Thoughts and Debates about Art and Design in General Art and Interactive Media

Interactive media has become more virtual by time and due to this it has become less physical but more Interactive which is a bit of a debate in itself as they are both related to each other in a way. They all have a design to them that is appealing and all have style, but the art in them is the most breath taking and most beautiful part of Interactive Media works.
